There's Another Form 990 Deadline Coming Up!

Ahh, another day, another dollar.

And another month, another 990 Form deadline!

It’s no secret August brings with it a lot of new and (potentially) exciting things: it’s the beginning of football season, school’s starting back, and tax-exempt organizations that operate on a fiscal year of April 1 to March 31 have a Form 990 deadline for the 2016 tax year! Okay, so that last one doesn’t really roll off the tongue as well, but it’s what we’re here to talk about.

Form 990, Form 990-EZ, & Form 990-N, Oh My!
And did we mention Form 990-PF?! Depending on how much your organization earned in gross receipts during the 2016 tax year, you’ll need to file one of these four 990 Forms with the IRS by August 15, 2017. If your organization
  • Received less than $50,000 in gross receipts, you’re required to e-file Form 990-N.
  • Received between $50,000 and $200,000 in gross receipts, you’re required to file Form 990-EZ.
  • Received more than $200,000 in gross receipts or has more than $500,000 in total assets, you’re required to file Form 990.
  • Is a private foundation, you’re required to file Form 990-PF regardless of gross receipts.
Keep in mind that Form 990-N is an online form and can only be electronically filed (or e-filed) with the IRS. The other forms can be submitted online or on paper.

But, Of Course, It’s Easiest to E-file
E-filing Form 990 - whichever Form 990 you file - is infinitely faster, easier, and more secure than paper filing. We even know the best place to do it: ExpressTaxExempt! ExpressTaxExempt is our sister product and the leader of the 990 e-filing game. They’ve simplified the filing process by breaking down each form into interview-style questions so completing your return is a breeze! And their IRS-authorized e-filing software transmits your return securely and directly to the IRS once you’re done.

And if things get away from you in the next week and you won’t be able to file on time, you can always e-file Form 8868, the 990 extension form, with ExpressTaxExempt to get an extra 6 months to file your return.

Head on over to www.ExpressTaxExempt.com now to get started! And if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to give them a call!

Heads Up: Your Nonprofit's Tax Form May Be Due

Hey! Do you work with a nonprofit? Know someone who does?

Did you know that it may be time for that nonprofit to file its tax form with the IRS to remain a tax-exempt organization?

The Tax-Exempt Tax Form
When a nonprofit becomes a tax-exempt organization, they agree to report certain financial details to the IRS each year on a Form 990. The form and its information let the IRS know that the organization is still operating within the regulations required to remain tax-exempt. How big the organization is - and how much money it brings in for its tax-exempt purpose - determines which 990 Form is filed with the IRS:
  • Form 990-N, the e-Postcard, is e-filed by organizations that receive less than $50,000 in gross receipts annually.
    • Note: As an electronic form, Form 990-N cannot be paper filed and can only be e-filed.
  • Form 990-EZ is filed by organizations that receive between $50,000 and $200,000 in gross receipts annually and/or have more than $200,000 in total assets.
  • Form 990, the Long Form, is filed by organizations that receive more than $200,000 in gross receipts annually and/or have more than $500,000 in total assets.
  • Form 990-PF, Private Foundation, is filed by tax-exempt organizations classified by the IRS as Private Foundations, regardless of total income.

Who Needs to File July 15
Here’s how the deadline for Form 990 works: it’s due to the IRS the 15th day of the 5th month following the organization’s tax year end date. For organizations that follow a normal calendar year tax schedule - January 1 through December 31 - this deadline is May 15th each year.

But not every tax-exempt organization is created the same way or even on the same timeline. Since some nonprofits become tax-exempt mid-year or work closely with industries that may follow other tax schedules, they’re able to set their tax year with the IRS to be any consecutive 12-month period. Of course, they can’t change it all willy-nilly; once they’ve set a tax year, that’s their tax year. But all of this does mean that Form 990 can pretty much be due any month of the year.

And for organizations who operate on a fiscal tax year that runs from March 1st to February 28th/29th, that month is July!

Where to File Your 990 Form
So, you’ve established that your tax-exempt organization operates on a fiscal year starting in March and ending in February. What’s next?

Well, first things first: your deadline (July 15) falls on a Saturday this year, so it’s automatically extended to Monday, July 17. But if you still don’t think you’ll be able to get everything together in time (Form 990 is known as the Long Form), you can e-file Form 8868 before then to get an automatic 6-month extension of time to file.

The best place to e-file your 990 Form is, of course, with our sister product ExpressTaxExempt. They’re the leader in the nonprofit e-filing industry because they make e-filing Form 990, 990-N, 990-EZ, 990-PF, and even Extension Form 8868, super easy - and fast! You can finish Form 990-N or 8868 in just a few minutes and their simplified, Q & A style format makes finishing the longer forms a much less daunting task. So check ‘em out: create an account and e-file your nonprofit tax return over at www.ExpressTaxExempt.com.

And if you have any questions at all about tax-exempt forms or e-filing, don’t hesitate to give them a call!

It's Time to File Your Form 2290 (HVUT)!

Do you know a truck driver? Are you a truck driver? Well, then have we got some info for you!

Truckers & Their Taxes
Chances are, you or someone you know is a part of the trucking industry. The Department of Transportation registers over 40,000 commercial drivers licenses each month, and there are roughly 350,000 owner-operators up and running in the US. While this means that technically only about 7% of traffic on highways is made up of big trucks, truckers pay around 36% of the taxes and fees that go into the Highway Trust Fund.

In this way, truckers are the backbone of our highways as well as the circulatory system of our economy. Basically every commodity you can think of - particularly those that require special handling - is transported to different locations around the country by truck drivers.

It’s no surprise, then, that truckers getting their taxes filed is quite a big deal.

Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT), Form 2290, & Schedule 1
Form 2290, the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return, is filed by truck drivers and owner-operators whose vehicles have a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. This is applicable for any and all taxable highway motor vehicles required to be registered under state, federal, Canadian, or Mexican law. The main function of Form 2290 is to figure and pay any tax due for these vehicles, but it can be used to report a variety of other information as well.

Form 2290 must be filed with a Schedule 1 which, once the return has been approved by the IRS, will be sent back stamped to the trucker who filed. This Schedule 1 is especially important because it’s used as proof that the vehicle’s taxes were paid and it can, therefore, continue operating until it’s time to file again a year later.

E-filing Form 2290
It’s no surprise one of the easiest ways to file Form 2290 is e-filing, but did you know ExpressIRSForms’s sister product, ExpressTruckTax, is the #1 IRS-authorized e-filer for HVUT Form 2290?? Thousands of truckers and owner-operators e-file through ExpressTruckTax each year not only because it’s fast, simple, and cost-effective, but also because they have the fastest return time for that stamped Schedule 1! Now, during 2290 pre-filing, you can get your Schedule 1 back in as little as just a few minutes after you pay and e-file. And with ExpressTruckTax, you can also pay any heavy vehicle taxes directly from your account through an electronic funds withdrawal (or direct debit).

But don’t dawdle: the time to file is now! The official filing season for 2290 forms due August 1, 2017, begins July 1 and the longer you wait now, the busier the IRS gets, and the longer you’ll have to wait later for your stamped Schedule 1.

So head on over to ExpressTruckTax to get started or download their 2290 e-filing app to file on the go! And if you need any help or have any questions, the ExpressTruckTax US-based customer support team is more than happy to help by phone, live chat, or e-mail!

There's Another IRS Deadline Soon!

Have you ever volunteered for a nonprofit or charity? Chances are, it was a 501(c)(3) organization recognized as tax-exempt by the IRS. But did you know that even tax-exempt organizations have to report to the IRS every year?

Well, head’s up: they do and their main deadline is coming up!

In order to confirm that they’re still operating within the regulations for tax-exempt organizations with the IRS each year, these groups must file one of the forms in the 990 Form Series. And their deadline to have their 990 Form filed is the 15th day of the fifth month after their tax year end date. So, for organizations that follow a calendar year tax year - which runs from January 1 to December 31 - that deadline is May 15!

Curious to know more about the 990 Forms? Well, we’ll tell ya! First, there’s the one that started it all: the 990 Form, also known as the 990 Long Form. This one’s filed by organizations that receive $200,000 or more in gross receipts for the year or those with more than $500,000 in total assets. A lot of information is needed for the 990 Long Form to confirm such large amounts of money are being used for the organization’s tax-exempt purpose.

Slightly less in-depth is the 990-EZ Form, which is filed by organizations that receive between $50,000 and $200,000 in gross receipts annually. Not as much information is needed to complete Form 990-EZ, but filers should still be prepared to provide thorough data on their contributions, expenses, assets, etc. to complete the form.

For those tax-exempt organizations that make fewer than $50,000 in gross receipts annually - which is the majority of them - there’s the Form 990-N, also known as the e-Postcard. It gets this name because it’s an online-only form that must be e-filed either with the IRS directly or through a third-party, IRS-authorized e-file provider (psst…like ExpressTaxExempt!). With the 990-N, all filers need to do is provide their organizations basic identifying information (name, EIN, address, contact), confirm that they made less than $50,000 and are still operational, and submit the return.

Now, based on how they’re set up and receive donations, some tax-exempt organizations fall under the category Private Foundation. These organizations, regardless of their total gross receipts, must file Form 990-PF.

And now for the best part: all of these forms are available to e-file more easily than ever with our sister product, ExpressTaxExempt! They even have the extension form for the 990 Series, Form 8868, so users can get an automatic 6 extra months to file if they need it. So why not pop on over to their website and check ‘em out? Or, if you want, give us a call and we’ll put you right in touch with them to answer any questions you may have!

Your First Quarter Taxes Are Due Soon!

Ahoy there, ExpressIRSForms readers!

You may have noticed we’ve been a little scarce lately…that’s because we’ve consolidated some things around the office and are now officially back full-time as ExpressTaxFilings! Those of you who’ve been with us for a while may remember when we made the switch from ExpressTaxFilings to ExpressIRSForms about a year and a half ago. Well, in order to streamline our e-filing services (and so as not to get e-filers confused with the actual IRS’s e-filing system), we’ve reworked ExpressTaxFilings to be better than ever!

Don’t worry: you can still visit us here and even log into your account from ExpressIRSForms.com, but for official purposes, everything will operate under the name ExpressTaxFilings from now on. Of course, we’ll be popping back over here every now and again to bring you the e-filing information you need to stay compliant with the IRS! Liiike…

Form 941 - to report your 2017 first quarter taxes - is due soon!

And it’s in just under a week, to be exact: the deadline is May 1, 2017.

If this isn’t your first 941 rodeo, you’re probably aware of the rule that the 941 deadline for each quarter is the last day of the month after the quarter ends. Technically, this means Form 941 for the first quarter should be due April 30, but since that day falls on a Sunday this year, the IRS gives you until Monday (May 1) to get everything filed.

Even with all our changes, you can still e-file Form 941 with your ExpressIRSForms (turned ExpressTaxFilings) account! And everything’s just a fast and simple as ever. Of course, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to give us a call; we’re still here at (704) 684-4751 and via live chat and email at support@ExpressTaxFilings.com!

File Form 7004 TOMORROW to Extend Your Business Tax Return Deadline!

Hey! Do you need to file ANY of these forms with the IRS tomorrow:
  • Forms 706-GS(D), 706-GS(T),
  • Forms 1120, 1120-C, 1120-F, 1120-FSC, 1120-H, 1120-L, 1120-ND, 1120-PC, 1120-POL, 1120-REIT, 1120-RIC, 1120S, 1120-SF,
  • Forms 1041, 1041-N, 1041-QFT, 1042,
  • Forms 1065, 1065-B, 1066,
  • Form 3520-A, or
  • Forms 8612, 8613, 8752, 8804, 8831, 8876, 8924, 8928
for your business?

Are you not exactly ready to file one (or more) of these forms by tomorrow?

If you answered yes and then no, it’s time to head on over to ExpressExtension to e-file your Form 7004, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File Certain Business Income Tax, Information, and other Returns. It only takes a few minutes and you’ll get anywhere from five and a half to seven extra months to file your return.

Important Note: Form 7004 does not extend the amount of time you have to pay any business taxes you owe to the IRS. Unfortunately, those are still due by their original deadline. BUT it does give you a few months to get everything in order so you can file a complete, correct return.

One of the easiest ways to apply for an extension with Form 7004 is with ExpressExtension. All you need is your business’s EIN, basic contact info, and the name of the form for which you’re extending the deadline. You don’t even need to include a reason why you need more time, so long as you have the information mentioned, you’ll automatically receive more time to file!

When you e-file with ExpressExtension, your form is double checked by the system to be sure it’s free of errors, and after you submit your form, you’ll get an email from us when it’s been approved. You should see this approval email within 24 hours of submitting your form.

And then voila! You’ve got 5½ - 7 more months to file! Easy as that.

If you have any questions once you’re over at ExpressExtension, we’d be happy to help in any way we can! Just give us a call (803-514-5155) or send us a live chat Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. EST or send us an email anytime at support@ExpressExtension.com!

W-2 Forms

1099 Forms
1099 Form filers who haven’t begun filing for the 2016 tax year yet may be in slightly less dire straits - if they fall in the right categories. Regardless of the 1099, you need to file or what you need to report on it, the recipient copies must be mailed out today, January 31, 2017.

And if you need to file Form 1099-MISC to report nonemployee compensation in box 7, you must file Copy A of Form 1099-MISC with the IRS today. You may also be required to file a copy of this form with your state today as well.

E-filing with ExpressIRSForms
ExpressIRSForms is the perfect place for last-minute filing. Not only do we begin the IRS e-filing process as soon as you hit transmit (ensuring you that pre-11:59 p.m. timestamp that marks your return on time), we’ll also print, stamp, and mail your recipient copies!

Now, we can only guarantee your recipient copies go out today if you get them in by 11:00 a.m. EST today. But we are pulling extra hours to provide the support you need so get them in as soon as you can anyway.

Speaking of support, if you have any questions as we get down to the wire, we’re here and we’re open late. Give us a call at (704) 684-4751 or send us a live chat and we’ll do our best to help you get everything filed on time. And, as always, you can also send us an email to support@ExpressIRSForms.com and we’ll make sure you get a speedy response!
