Coming Soon to ExpressIRSForms: The 94x Series!

E-File Federal 94x Forms
You’ve asked, and we’re about to deliver!

The 94x Series, a set of IRS forms most all employers are required to file, will be making its debut on ExpressIRSForms this year. Soon, you’ll be able to take care of your annual and quarterly tax filing with your favorite e-file provider!

So just what are these new forms we’ll be offering? Read on, and we’ll tell ya!

Form 940

Form 940 is what employers use to report annual Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA) tax. Employers who paid wages of $1500 or more to employees in any calendar quarter during 2015 or 2016 needs to file Form 940 and pay FUTA tax. FUTA tax is used to pay for unemployment compensation to workers who have lost their jobs, but it is not collected or deducted from employee wages.

Form 940 is due January 31 every year, unless you’ve paid off your FUTA tax in full, in which case it’s due February 10.

Form 941

Form 941 is a quarterly report employers use to indicate income, social security, and Medicare taxes withheld from employees’ wages. Employers also use Form 941 to pay their portion of social security or Medicare taxes quarterly. The deadlines for Form 941 are as follows:
  • First quarter (Jan-Mar), April 30
  • Second quarter (Apr-Jun), July 31
  • Third quarter (Jul-Sept), October 31
  • Fourth quarter (Oct-Dec), January 31

Form 943

A pretty specific form, Form 943 is the Employer’s Annual Federal Tax Return for Agricultural Employees. If employers paid wages to one or more farmworkers during the calendar year, they must report Form 943 by the following January 31. The wages the employers paid to their farmworkers must have been subject to social security and Medicare taxes or federal income tax withholding to file Form 943.

Form 944

Form 944 is known as the Employer’s Annual Federal Tax Return. This form is for the smallest of employers. Basically, you have to be so small, it’s not worth it to the IRS for you to send in four 941 Forms per year. This typically applies to those whose annual liability for social security, Medicare, and withheld federal income taxes is $1000 or less.

Coming Soon!

Form 941 will be available in the upcoming weeks so ExpressIRSForms clients can use their accounts to e-file Form 941 in time for the first quarter deadline on April 30. The other 940 Forms mentioned here (and maybe a few others?) will be available within a few months. Of course, you’ll hear it here first when they’re ready, so be sure to check back regularly!
